It’s like Ninja Warrior for Tree Lovers

Have you seen Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in their masterpiece movie You've Got Mail?

Yes, I know, it’s hardly a masterpiece, and I have binged it far more than I care to admit. But it is still one that I love rewatching every September.

If you've seen the movie too you'll no doubt remember Tom Hanks churning out his personal motto: "It's not personal, it's business."

Kathleen Kelly - aka Meg Ryan - whose business is failing, flops back and forth chanting this motto to herself but not really feeling it.

And I always want to yell at her through the screen. “But that's not true!”

It’s not true because small business is so personal. I am a small business owner, and I come from parents who both also had small businesses while I was growing up.

It's deeply personal. There is no way around it.

Maybe that's the core of why I love working with small business owners because they have invested so much of their time, energy and money of course. It’s a sacrifice to be sure, but they do it because they have huge dreams for their brand.

When I get to support a small business I'm not just producing images for a client. I know that my work goes much deeper than that. I am building into their vision, supporting their family, silently cheering them on, and in my own way, I get to be part of their success.

Working with DeVos Tree Care was exactly that - a combination of amazing angles for pictures but also beauty in knowing I'm supporting a local business with a face behind it.

So without a doubt, these shoots are some of my most exciting shoots that I feel in my core.

DeVos Tree

I love trees like anyone else who appreciates nature, but Aaron DeVos LOVES trees! Watching him and his crew work is like stepping into a ninja warrior gym except everyone has razor-sharp blades and chainsaws and at least someone is hanging from a tree with both in their hands.

But when Aaron and I spoke about the images he wanted for his brand, he wanted to focus on the legacy that trees give us. That core value is built into his business where trees aren't seen as problems to be managed but rather living things that need to be tended and respected.
